The Root Chakra - Survival, Safety, Security, Stability, Worthiness, Wealth & Health
When your roots run deep there is no reason to fear the heavy weather when it comes
We all struggle with root chakra issues throughout our lives. If you came from a challenging background where there were issues with your birth, dangers or struggles at home, in your neighbourhood, with your parents, if there was physical or emotional abuse, financial issues, health issues… all of this affects the root chakra.
What is the root chakra?
The root chakra, traditionally named the Muladhara chakra, is our primal energy centre and it lays the foundation for all the other energy centres in the chakra system. This vortex of energy is located at the base of the spine and connected to the sex organs. Our relationship to this chakra often reflects how we experienced our first few years of life here on earth, beginning in the womb. Programmed in early childhood, when we were too young to remember, many of the major issues within this chakra go unrecognised because they’ve been ingrained in our nervous systems and become a way of life. Survival is the main issue. When a young child experiences trauma, they pull their energy up and out of the body, away from the roots.
Everybody has blocks and imbalances within the chakra system. Within the root chakra, the most common emotional issues when imbalanced would be:
You have trust issues in life
You are over-controlling about life and have a huge fear of losing control
You struggle with a lack and scarcity mindset, worrying you don’t have enough
You’re always worrying about money
You over-work yourself and often get overwhelmed or burnt out
You don’t get along with your family and often have dramas with them
You’re hyper-independent and avoid asking for help or support from others
You have anxiety and can’t settle in unfamiliar places
You’re often on edge and easily triggered by the activity going on around you
You struggle to be your true self and default into people-pleaser mode
You feel like you don’t belong and struggle to connect deeply with others
You surround yourself with ‘stuff’ to fill the space around youYou overeat when you’re stressed and have problems with your bodyweight
You struggle with health issues, areas such as feet, legs, and sex organs may have problems

For a lotus flower to blossom and reveal its beauty, it must first have its roots anchored deeply into the mud.
The mud, the dirt, the grit and gravity of this earth is where all growth begins. We must connect with our roots from this life and beyond. The darkness is where the gold lies. Great treasures are found deep beneath the surface.
When I'm in an emotional clearing session, I love to refer to the body as a garden. A living ecosystem that requires care, attention, and nurturing to thrive. Just as a garden needs regular maintenance, proper nourishment, and protection against harmful elements, our bodies also require similar care to maintain optimal health and well-being. Our emotional blocks (triggers) are like weeds that wrap around our hearts and restrict the flow of our true essence. If weeds are left unchecked, they overrun the space, choking and strangling the growth of desirable plants. Similarly, neglecting the body can lead to the accumulation of harmful substances, unhealthy habits, and negative thought patterns. These "weeds" can hinder our well-being, causing imbalances, disease, and emotional distress.
To heal trauma in the first chakra we have to dig deep, go back to our roots and explore where emotional blocks (weeds) from the past may be keeping us in the dark and hindering our growth.
Shame is a soul-eating emotion - Carl Jung
Level 1 of The Spiral
Deserving; Releasing SHAME and increasing SELF-WORTH
As we journey through the spiral and begin in the root chakra we uncover 9 major instalments (core emotional blocks) behind shame, guilt and dogma. A root clear changes our whole relationship to something across our entire life. It does this by mapping WHEN we first attached various emotions to the thing that’s triggering us and helps to release distortions. This frees us from unhealthy patterns of behaviour and relating. We have a purer experience of each emotion without the stories of the past causing continual loops of the same pain and suffering time and time again.
Shame doesn’t just cause guilt, it leads to guilt that causes self-imposed isolation. This combination creates a destructive feedback loop. If shame remains unchecked it has a tendency to destroy anything that makes us feel seen and worthy. Shame runs so deep and will consume any vibrancy or vitality in life if we let it have its way. To release shame, we have to look deep within and find forgiveness in ourselves. We have to meet that shame with radical acceptance, find forgiveness in our hearts and then let what happened in the past be the past.
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
– Steve Jobs
So what does a healthy and balanced root chakra look like?
When your root chakra is balanced it allows a free flow of energy to move through the rest of the chakras. You will feel noticeably grounded and calm and you won’t have fears that there are not enough resources to survive in life. Money worries will start to disappear. You’ll let go of needing to control things out of fear and you’ll have a deeper sense of trust in life. There will be a desire to be out in nature and be close to other humans. A healthy root chakra creates a deep sense of inner peace. You’ll feel stable, supported and strong enough to face all weather, rooted, just like a tree.
